- mid-14c., "escape inclusion in; lie beyond the scope of," from Old French transcendre "transcend, surpass," and directly from Latin transcendere "climb over or beyond, surmount, overstep," from trans- "beyond" (see trans-) + scandere "to climb" (see scan (v.)).
