banlieue n.f. 郊區，市郊: 在中世紀，每當封建領主組建軍隊參戰時，其附庸都要承擔為其出征的義務。屆時，領主會下達一道動員令（ban），將其所有的附庸都召集起來。當時的法律規定，領主所住城市方圓一古裏（lieue，約合4公裏）之內的區域都屬於該領主的地盤，在這片區域內，領主所下達的動員令同樣有效。因此，人們就將這片區域稱作“banlieue”。
17世紀時，“banlieue”的詞義發生了改變。從此，人們開始用它來指稱大城市周邊的村鎮和田野。
