ashamed: ashamed: [OE] Ashamed is an Old English compound, formed ultimately from the noun scamu ‘shame’. The verb derived from this, scamian, meant ‘feel shame’ as well as (as in modern English) ‘put to shame’, and in this sense the intensive prefix ā- was added to it. The resulting verb ashame died out in the 16th century, but its past participle ashamed has survived.
